Can you use a multimeter to test an electric fence energiser?
Short answer is no. Most electric fence energisers output a voltage of around 7500V. While the output of an electric fence is low AMPS for safety, the componentry in a normal electrical multimeter is only rated for small amount of voltage. Check out the EEVblog video below to see what happens if you test an electric fence energiser with standard electrical testing tools. (Hint: skip towards the end)
Always use a proper electric fence tester to test your energiser
When testing an electric fence always use a meter designed for the high voltages that electric fence energisers produce. Most common multi meters are only designed for 415V where as a average electric fence energiser produces about 7500 Volts
